  • Gilas Pilipinas Women absorbed a 38-85 beating at the hands of mighty Canada in the FIBA Olympic Pre-qualifying Tournament on Thursday at the Astros Arena in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Filipinas were limited to just 11 points in the first half as the unbeaten world No. 7 Canadians controlled the lopsided match right from the get-go, securing a semifinals spot with their second straight win.

Jack Animam was the lone bright spot for Gilas Women, who are now on the brink of elimination with a 0-2 win-loss record in Group B, after tallying 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal in nearly 30 minutes of harrowing experience on the floor.

Vanessa De Jesus and Kacey Dela Rosa scored nine and eight for Gilas Women, who will be shown the exit door in the Final Four race if host Mexico (1-0) beats Senegal (0-1) in their match being played as of posting time.

Gilas Women, who suffered a sorry 58-61 loss to the Mexicans to open the tournament on Tuesday, will take on the Senegalese on Friday.

Syla Swords sliced through Gilas Women’s defense with 15 points, Jasmin Bascoe had 10 markers while Agot Makeer and Shaina Pellington finished with nine markers each for Canada.

The Canadians seek a group stage sweep against Mexico on Friday.
