The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority conducted preemptive pumping on Saturday to remove accumulated water, improve water flow and increase the river’s capacity.
Marikina City boosts its flood control strategy with a new amphibious dredger from the DPWH, enhancing dredging operations along Marikina River to reduce flood risks, improve water flow, and protect families and communities during the rainy season.
Amid heavy and overnight rains brought by tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon, or habagat, the continued dredging of the Marikina River is helping the city mitigate flooding, authorities said.
According to Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro, the city’s key flood-mitigation measures include the continuous clearing and deepening of the Marikina River, along with regular maintenance of canals, creeks and other waterways.
These efforts are aimed at increasing the capacity of waterways to receive and drain large volumes of rainwater.
The measures have proven important despite prolonged and heavy rains, with major roads and many communities in the city remaining passable, she said.
However, the mayor stressed that the local government should not become complacent because weather conditions continue to change and become increasingly unpredictable.
As an additional measure to control rising water caused by habagat rains, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted preemptive pumping on Saturday to remove accumulated water, improve water flow and increase the river’s capacity.
The Department of Public Works and Highways’ Tumana Pumping Station also remained operational.
MMDA mobile pumps likewise remained deployed as additional support for flood-control efforts in the area. The mobile pump being used can discharge 1.25 cubic meters of water per second.
The MMDA continues to monitor conditions in Tumana to prevent excessive water levels and reduce the risk of flooding in nearby communities.
