Philippine national team swimmers Kayla Sanchez and Gian Santos reset records in the women’s 100-meter freestyle and men’s 200m freestyle, respectively, at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California on Thursday.

Sanchez, a two-time Olympian, clocked in 53.46 seconds as she eclipsed her previous record of 53.67 seconds in the 2024 Paris Summer Games.

However, the three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist finished sixth overall as two-time Olympic gold medalist Meg Harris of Australia won the event with a time of 52.60 seconds.

Meanwhile, Santos tallied one minute and 49.78 seconds to be the new record holder after eclipsing the previous time of 1:50:29 set by Adrian Eichler at the German Swimming Championships in Berlin last year as he finished 31st.

Both Sanchez and Santos will be part of the national aquatics team that will compete in the 20th Asian Games in Japan as they join Xiandi Chua, Teia Salvino, Miranda Renner, Heather White and Logan Noguchi.

Swimming will be held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre from 20 to 25 September.
