Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso told graduates of the Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology on Friday that their diplomas mark only the beginning of a challenging journey ahead.

Speaking at the university’s 59th Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center, Domagoso urged the Class of 2026 to prepare for setbacks, failure, and hardships as they enter the workforce.

“In the real state of society, you will still go through many trials and failures,” Domagoso said.

He advised the graduates not to fear failure, describing it as an essential life experience that builds emotional strength and character, adding that completing their college degrees had already demonstrated their resilience.

Domagoso stressed that the graduates hold full responsibility for their personal and professional futures.

“Nobody will write your story — not your parents, not your friends, not your teachers, deans, or me,” Domagoso said. “It is only up to you.”

Reflecting on his upbringing in extreme poverty, his early work as a garbage collector, and his initial childhood dream of becoming a ship captain, the mayor illustrated how unexpected paths can lead to success.

“What was my dream? To become a ship captain,” Domagoso said. “What did God give me? To become the captain of the city of Manila.”

He reminded the new graduates that their futures remain unwritten and entirely theirs to shape.

“The pages of your book of life are blank,” Domagoso said. “You are the ones who will write it.”
