CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Lapasan National High School suspended classes Monday after an online mass shooting threat circulated on social media, school and local officials said.
School principal Ferdinand Vinco announced the suspension after being notified of the threat Sunday midnight by barangay captain Julito Ogsimer.
Vinco immediately alerted school officials and the parents’ association that face-to-face classes would be suspended pending a security assessment and investigation of the campus.
He activated the school’s emergency communication channels and held an online meeting where officials decided to halt classes while authorities evaluate the situation.
The local barangay government issued an advisory confirming the preventive suspension, citing public safety and the welfare of students, teachers and school personnel.
“In the interest of public safety and the welfare of our students, teachers and school personnel, punong barangay Julito Ogsimer has recommended the preventive suspension of classes at Lapasan National High School tomorrow, following the circulation of social media posts containing alleged threats of a possible mass shooting targeting the school,” the advisory stated.
Local officials cited that while the authenticity of the social media posts has not been verified, the measure was taken out of an abundance of caution to protect the school community from risk.
Ogsimer formally requested Police Station 3 to launch an immediate investigation to determine the origin, credibility, and intent of the online post, and to pursue legal action against anyone responsible for causing public alarm or endangering safety.
The barangay also urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified rumors, and report any relevant information to law enforcement as the investigation continues.
