Architect of Greatness

Patrick Henry “Pat” Aquino prides himself not only on the number of titles he has received as a basketball coach, but also on the lives he touched along the way.

For the multi-titled former women’s national team mentor and current Blackwater tactician, his work as a coach goes beyond routine game plans and skill development inside the court.

Aquino believes coaches hold the power to mold character and influence lives.

“That’s probably what I’m most proud of — helping them grow not just as basketball players but as great human beings,” Aquino said during his appearance in the DAILY TRIBUNE’s Off the Court last Thursday.

“I’m just happy that many of my players have grown not only as basketball players but have also become successful in their careers. I’m grateful that I became a part of their journey and that they’re able to help their families.”

The 55-year-old Aquino is one of the prime movers in the development and rise of Philippine women’s basketball.

Under his guidance, Gilas Pilipinas Women reached great heights, highlighted by three gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games and a historic peak FIBA world ranking of 30th.

Aquino’s extensive resume calling the shots in women’s basketball spans decades.

After his collegiate career playing for University of the Philippines, Aquino saw action for Blu Detergent in the Philippine Basketball League.

But coaching is his true calling.

Tapped by Ever Bilena, Aquino steered the team to a grand slam in the defunct Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) from 1998 to 1999, before capturing another crown during the league’s brief revival in 2008.

One of Aquino’s crowning achievements came during his University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) homecoming.

Hired by National University (NU) in 2012 to turn around its women’s basketball program, Aquino became the architect of the Lady Bulldogs’ dynastic rule.

From 2014 to 2019, NU reigned supreme as the undisputed queen of UAAP women’s basketball, anchored by stars Jack Animam and Afril Bernardino.

“It was really because of the overall help from the management, the school, the coaching staff, the players, and everyone involved,” Aquino said of the Lady Bulldogs’ championship streak.

“I believe that success boils down to having one common goal. The support we had from management, the school, the players, and the coaching staff made everything possible.”

Aquino departed the Lady Bulldogs in 2022 when the women’s division returned from a two-year pandemic hiatus.

Serving various national squads from the youth level to the senior ranks from 2014 to March this year, Aquino’s stamp of excellence was cemented by Gilas’ 2019, 2021 and 2025 SEA Games mints, with the only 2023 edition slipping through its fingers in a silver-medal finish.

Before concluding his tenure with the women’s program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, Aquino guided Gilas in the 2026 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France. The Filipinas’ lone win over Colombia, 74-59, in the group stage propelled the nation to its highest rank of 30th in the world standings.

“It was really about the relationship I had with the players. We believed in each other and in what we wanted to accomplish,” Aquino said.

“Again, the support of the SBP, especially under executive director Sonny Barrios, was unbelievable. We just wanted to do our best and give back to the country for everything they gave us.”

Beyond hardware, Aquino takes immense pride in elevating individual careers.

His protégé, Filipino-Nigerian center Jack Animam, stands as one of his greatest success stories, establishing herself as an international star across leagues in Serbia, France, China, Australia, Romania, Japan and Poland.

“I’m just so happy, especially with Jack. I think she’s really the first player from our program who grew into an international player. She’s played in so many places already. She’s gone through injuries, recovered, and continued playing,” Aquino said.

“The fact that she’s always representing not just our country but women’s basketball in different parts of the world makes me very proud, especially because she came from our program.”

“Jack is still young, but I’ve seen her grow and bloom into a wonderful player. I wish her even more success, and I’ll always be here to support her.”

Life in the pros

When one door closes, another opens — and for Aquino, the next chapter brought an intense new frontier.

Following his release from national team duties, Aquino was named interim head coach of Blackwater after management parted ways with former mentor Jeff Cariaso during the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup.

Taking over a Bossing squad that had historically stuck near the bottom of the standings was a daunting task, but Aquino embraced the fight.

“The reality hit me when I started coaching in the PBA. It’s really hard because I’m going up against some of the best coaches in the Philippines — Coach Yeng (Guiao), Coach Tim (Cone), and many others who are all experienced and champion coaches,” he admitted.

“I just need to prove myself and continue developing my coaching career and coaching style. It’s about the system we run and the relationship between the coaches and the players.”

Having served as a long-time deputy for Blackwater, Aquino understands that forging a winning culture requires patience.

He insists his squad has the potential to challenge established heavyweights. It will take a lot of collective effort, but it’s very doable.

“It’s just the fact that I really want them to play their best all the time. That’s one thing that I wanted to impart to them, that I’ve been a winner, and I want this team to be a winner also,” Aquino said.

“As far as being here with Blackwater for the longest time, I think it’s not really changing the culture, but changing the mindset of how it feels to be a winner.”

“So that’s what we’re trying to change. Hopefully, we can impart that to the kids and to the players, so they really play hard and play well.”

For Aquino, the court has never been just a floor marked by boundaries — it is a proving ground where doubts are shattered, and champions are forged from belief alone.

Having transformed forgotten programs into unstoppable dynasties and carried Philippine women’s basketball to international respect, he now stands at the baseline of his hardest battle yet.

Turning an underdog into a contender while shaping countless lives through basketball isn’t just another job for Aquino; it is his ultimate calling.
