A Bulacan State University (BSU) professor was shot dead by an unidentified gunman outside his home in Barangay Poblacion, Santa Maria, Bulacan, the police confirmed Saturday.
Cops identified the victim as 38-year-old Stephen Angelo Enriquez, popularly known among students and colleagues as “Sir Gelo.”
According to the police report, Enriquez was outside his house at around 3 a.m. on 30 July when the assailant opened fire.
His sister told investigators she heard several gunshots followed by her brother’s cries for help. She rushed outside and found Enriquez lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Enriquez was taken to Bocaue Specialist Hospital but later died from his injury.
Initial investigation showed the suspect was wearing a white ball cap at the time of the attack.
Police said investigators are reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the area and coordinating with neighboring police stations to identify and arrest the gunman.
Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the killing.
The shooting is the latest in a string of attacks involving educators in recent months.
In June, a volunteer teacher was killed by a stray bullet during an ambush targeting government troops in Lanao del Sur.
Earlier in May, a pregnant teacher was fatally shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Abra.
Police later arrested a public school principal in connection with the killing after investigators linked the attack to a personal grudge.
Police said the investigation into Enriquez’s killing remains ongoing.
