Both the Cebu City and Cebu Provincial health offices have reported a surge in dengue cases, prompting authorities to intensify monitoring and remind the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season.

According to the latest surveillance report from the Cebu City Epidemiology Surveillance and Statistics Unit (CESSU) of the City Health Department (CHD), Cebu City recorded 1,228 dengue cases and 10 deaths from 1 January to 18 July, translating to a case fatality rate of 0.81 percent.

The number of cases represents a 12.35-percent increase from the 1,093 infections reported during the same period in 2025.

Dengue-related deaths also climbed sharply from three last year to 10 this year. Patients ranged in age from two months to 96 years, with a median age of 12. Children aged one to 10 years accounted for 498 cases, or 40.55 percent of the total, while males comprised 661 cases, or 53.83 percent.

The city logged 17 new dengue cases from July 12 to 18, following a peak of 78 cases recorded two weeks earlier.

Among the city’s barangays, Guadalupe posted the highest number of cases with 80, followed by Basak San Nicolas (64), Lahug (57), Labangon (53), and Tisa (48).

Other barangays with high case counts included Mambaling (44), Kalunasan (40), Punta Princesa (37), Pasil (36), and Duljo-Fatima, Quiot, and Talamban, with 34 cases each.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Provincial Health Office reported 381 dengue cases from 25 local government units over the past five weeks.

“It really spiked, considering that we’re already in the rainy season,” said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Jenina Canoy.

The province also recorded two dengue-related deaths, one each from the municipalities of Consolacion and Compostela.

Areas with the highest number of cases included Toledo City, Barili, Talisay City, Consolacion, Carcar City, and Medellin.

Despite the increase, Capitol Piso health consultant Dr. Elisse Nicole Catalan stressed that the situation has not reached outbreak levels.

“It’s a cause for concern, but not an outbreak,” Catalan said.

“We’re not here to cause panic or fear. But we reiterate that early detection and treatment save lives,” she added.
