The Philippine Navy (PN) is investigating the death of an officer candidate who collapsed during training at the Naval Education, Training and Doctrine Command in Zambales.
In a statement, the PN confirmed the death of Officer Candidate Aldwayne B. Dulnuan, a member of Naval Officer Candidate Course Class 47, who died on 22 July at Ulticare Medical Center Inc. in Olongapo City following a medical emergency.
"The Philippine Navy is currently looking into the matter to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. At this time, it would be premature to comment further while the investigation is ongoing," the PN said.
According to the Navy, Dulnuan experienced dizziness and severe chills on the morning of 21 July after completing a scheduled five-kilometer run at Naval Station Leovigildo Gantioqui. Medical personnel immediately administered first aid at the station's dispensary before transferring him to San Marcelino District Hospital.
An initial medical assessment considered cardiac arrhythmia, heat exhaustion, and electrolyte imbalance. At San Marcelino District Hospital, doctors recommended his admission to the intensive care unit with a working diagnosis of heat stroke. He was later transferred to Ulticare Medical Center Inc. for specialized treatment, while his family was immediately informed and arrived later that day.
Despite continuous medical care, Dulnuan was pronounced dead at 12:53 p.m. on 22 July.
The Navy said the medical cause of death was identified as a severe infection affecting the central nervous system, with a compromised respiratory system.
The Education and Training Command has launched investigative and administrative proceedings and is coordinating with medical authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"The investigation is ongoing, and based on the information available at this stage, there is no indication of foul play," the PN said.
The Navy also extended its condolences to Dulnuan's family and assured them of continued assistance.
It reiterated that the Education and Training Command maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against maltreatment, abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, and other forms of misconduct, adding that all safety measures and training protocols are being enforced to safeguard the welfare of officer candidates.
