Two young combatants of the communist New People’s Army were killed and one was captured during a clash with government troops in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on Wednesday, 29 July.
Troops from 76th Infantry (VICTRIX) Battalion were then conducting an operation in response to reports from the civilians about the presence of an armed group in Barangay Del Pilar when they engaged in a firefight with around 10 NPA member.
The guerilla fighters were believed to be members of the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya, Ignacio Calavria Magadia (KLG ICM) under the command of a certain Antonio Baculo, alias Floro or Duralite.
The government troops also recovered various items left by the fleeing guerilla members, including components in making improvised explosive device, food items, and personal belongings.
The 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade has launched pursuit operations against the fleeing members of the armed group.
In a statement, 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade Commander Brigadier General Melencio Ragudo underscored the importance of strong partnerships among the Army, local government units, and communities in addressing security threats.
“This operation shows the importance of the Army’s strong partnership with local government units and the communities we serve,” Ragudo said.
“What happened here in Naujan demonstrates that when the local government, security forces, and residents work together, armed groups are given less space to move, intimidate communities, and disrupt the peace,” he said.
He added that government troops will continue to sustain pressure against the remaining members of the communist terrorist group (CTG) operating in the province.
“We will sustain our operations until the remaining armed personalities are accounted for. At the same time, we continue to encourage those who are still in the movement to surrender while they still have the opportunity,” Ragudo added.
Major General Ramon Zagala, commander of the 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division commended the ground troops for the steady progress in dismantling the remaining communist elements in Mindoro.
“This accomplishment is another indication that we are steadily reducing the capability of the remaining CTG elements in Mindoro. Every successful operation, every firearm recovered, and every life spared from violence brings us closer to a future where communities can focus on development instead of conflict,” Zagala said.
He said the Army’s mission remains centered on protecting communities and preserving peace.
“Our objective has never been to take lives. It is to protect communities and preserve peace. We hope those who continue to carry arms will choose to return to the folds of the law while they still can,” he added.
