The true measure of political maturity is not how a nation celebrates victory but how it accepts defeat.

Ed Lacson·7 August 2026

  • Vice President Sara Duterte skipped President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, dismissing the annual speech as "a waste of time" and expressing skepticism over the administration's latest anti-corruption pledge.

"I have no plans to watch it. It's a waste of time," Duterte said in a chance interview in The Hague.

Asked whether she would at least read news reports about the President's speech, the Vice President replied: "No."

Duterte also brushed aside Marcos' vow to prosecute those allegedly involved in irregularities surrounding flood control projects.

"Didn't he also say last year that before December someone would be imprisoned? Has anyone been imprisoned? No," Duterte said.

"So don't expect the former Speaker or members of the House of Representatives to go to jail."

In his SONA, Marcos disclosed that the Office of the Ombudsman was preparing to file multiple cases against his cousin, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, over alleged irregularities in flood control projects. He vowed that those responsible would face prosecution regardless of political affiliation or family ties.

"I am not the president of my family. I am not the president of my friends. I am the president of the Philippines," Marcos said in his address.

This marks the second consecutive year that Duterte has skipped the President's annual address. She also did not attend last year's SONA, saying she expected nothing "substantial" from Marcos' speech. In 2024, she likewise skipped the event, saying she had designated herself the government's "designated survivor" in the event of an emergency.

The once-formidable Marcos-Duterte alliance, which secured a landslide victory in the 2022 elections, has since deteriorated into an open political rift that culminated in Duterte's impeachment by the House of Representatives earlier this year.

She is currently facing an impeachment trial before the Senate over charges she has repeatedly denied.
