Samantha Catantan whipped Australian Sophia Glasson, 15-13, to make the Round of 64 of the Fencing World Championships at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong on Friday.
Catantan, coming off an anterior cruciate ligament injury, earned a bye in the Table of 128.
The 24-year-old fencer will next face Jessica Zi Jia Guo of Canada on Saturday in the Last 32.
Catantan’s sister, Sophia, wasn’t as fortunate as she was eliminated in the Table of 64 of the same event.
The younger Catantan, who clinched the bronze medal in the FIE Singapore Foil Satellite last year, also earned a bye in the Table of 128 but suffered a heartbreaking 12-15 loss to Anabella Acurero Gonzalez of Venezuela.
The Philippines has had a lackluster campaign in the World Championships through the first two days of competition.
Southeast Asian Games medalist Nathaniel Perez advanced to the Table of 64 in the men’s individual foil but fell short against Oscar Geudvert of Sweden, 4-15.
Noelito Jose Jr. reached the Table of 128 but lost to Paul Fortin of Sweden last Thursday in the men’s individual epee.
The tournament is part of the Filipino fencers’ preparation for the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan from 19 September to 4 October.
