Light but lethal.
Eumir Marcial wants another crack at Olympic glory.
Having won the Tokyo bronze in 2021, Marcial swears he still feels the itch to finally hit pay dirt when Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028.
“It’s my lifelong dream,” Marcial told DAILY TRIBUNE on Thursday from Tokyo where he has been training the last six weeks.
On the horizon is the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games this 19 September to 4 October.
But there is also a proposed professional match in the United States also on 19 September, an event American dealmaker Sean Gibbons describes as a crucial match.
“He’s just two or three fights from a world title shot,” Gibbons told this paper.
Marcial packs a 7-0-0 win-loss-draw card with four knockouts and remains devoted to go for his third Olympics.
Last time he fought in the pros, Marcial narrowly beat Venezuelan Eddy Colmenares during the Thrilla in Manila golden anniversary celebrations in October last year at the Araneta Coliseum.
After Tokyo, Marcial tried to upgrade his middleweight bronze when Paris hosted the Games but his weight class was removed from the calendar and he had to bulk up and take part at light-heavyweight where he was eliminated early.
But that’s going to be the same setup in Los Angeles and Marcial will be forced to fight at light-heavyweight, a weight class that makes him inferior physically.
