Police have launched a manhunt and formed a special task force to investigate the fatal shooting of a prominent American marine biologist inside his home in Sibulan town, Negros Oriental Sunday night.
The victim was identified as Kent Carpenter, a scientist whose landmark research declared the Philippines’ Verde Island Passage as the “center of marine shore fish biodiversity” in the world. He was also an adjunct professor and associate researcher at Silliman University.
Police said Carpenter was watching television with a 34-year-old Filipina companion at their residence in Barangay Ajong around 11:30 p.m. when three unidentified men wearing bonnets forcibly entered the house.
One of the suspects shot Carpenter in the head, killing him instantly.
While initial regional police reports stated the companion was injured, local police chief Capt. Mary Jean Gutierrez clarified Tuesday that the woman was left physically unharmed.
The Police Regional Office Negros Island Region has activated a Special Investigation Task Group to oversee the case.
Investigators are reviewing closed-circuit television footage, interviewing witnesses, and conducting forensic examinations to determine the motive and trace the suspects’ movements.
Regional director Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño condemned the killing and promised a swift investigation.
“We assure the victim’s family, the community, and our foreign visitors that this case is being treated with utmost urgency, and no effort will be spared until justice is served,” Cardiño said.
Authorities urged anyone with information about the attack to contact the Sibulan Municipal Police Station.
