The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said all major pumping stations in Metro Manila are fully operational as the government intensifies flood mitigation efforts during the rainy season.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said he has directed DPWH personnel nationwide to closely monitor flooding, inspect roads and bridges, and report damaged infrastructure to ensure a swift government response.
He also ordered regional offices to assess drainage systems and waterways and recommend measures to improve flood control in vulnerable areas.
DPWH personnel have been working with local government units to clear canals and drainage systems of garbage and other debris obstructing the flow of rainwater.
Dizon said pumping stations in flood-prone areas of Metro Manila functioned effectively during Friday’s heavy rains, including the Padre Faura, Remedios, Abad, Harbor View and Arroceros stations in Manila; the Sunog Apog station in Tondo; the Diokno station in Pasay; the Wawang Pulo station in Valenzuela; and mobile pumping units along G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.
The pumping stations help move floodwaters from major roads and low-lying areas into the Pasig River and Manila Bay, reducing the risk of prolonged flooding.
Dizon said the nationwide monitoring was ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who instructed government agencies to ensure flood control facilities remain operational throughout the rainy season.
He said keeping pumping stations running and waterways free of obstructions is essential to minimizing disruptions to residents, motorists and commuters during periods of heavy rainfall.
