Despite controlling much of the match, Colombia bowed out of the FIFA World Cup after a penalty shootout loss to Switzerland in the Round of 16.
Colombia outshot Switzerland 15-0 but failed to break through the Swiss defense. Neither side found the net in regulation or extra time, sending the match to penalties after 120 scoreless minutes.
With both teams missing two spot kicks, Colombia's Juan Hernández had a chance to give Los Cafeteros the advantage, but the Swiss goalkeeper made a crucial save.
Cedric Itten then converted his penalty down the middle to give Switzerland a 3-2 lead.
Colombia star Luis Díaz scored his side's final penalty to level the shootout at 3-3, leaving Switzerland with one last attempt.
Substitute Rubén Vargas calmly buried the decisive penalty into the bottom corner to send Switzerland into the quarterfinals. Vargas later left with a muscle injury, putting his availability for the next round in doubt.
An emotional Díaz was seen in tears following Colombia's elimination.
Meanwhile, veteran midfielder James Rodríguez, whose sixth World Cup appearance may have been his last, brushed aside speculation about his retirement after the match.
Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will face defending champion Argentina, matching the nation's deepest-ever run at a FIFA World Cup.
