Jude Bellingham scored twice as 10-man England defeated co-host Mexico, 3-2, at Estadio Azteca to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup.
The victory was particularly significant as Mexico had lost only three of its previous 89 matches at the iconic stadium.
England entered the Round of 16 clash facing concerns over playing at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level, a factor widely considered to favor the home side. Despite those challenges, the Three Lions secured the result.
Bellingham opened the scoring after converting Bukayo Saka's cross before doubling England's lead moments later, tapping in Harry Kane's delivery to complete his first-half brace.
Mexico responded through tournament breakout star Julián Quiñones, who volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from close range to cut the deficit before halftime.
England's task became more difficult when defender Jarell Quansah was sent off following a dangerous challenge on Jesús Gallardo, forcing the visitors to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Kane restored England's two-goal cushion by converting a second-half penalty, his sixth goal of the tournament.
Raúl Jiménez later scored from the penalty spot to bring Mexico within one, but England held firm despite being a man down.
After the match, Kane questioned several officiating decisions after England received three yellow cards and a red card.
The defeat ended co-host Mexico's World Cup campaign in the Round of 16.
England advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Norway.
