Cristiano Ronaldo said his conscience is "1000% clear" despite Portugal's defeat to Spain in a rematch of the UEFA Nations League final, saying he has already accomplished everything he set out to achieve with the national team.
Football's all-time leading scorer pointed to Portugal's UEFA Euro 2016 triumph and its two UEFA Nations League titles as defining achievements in his international career.
"I won three titles. Portugal before me had zero... Euro 2016 has the same dimension as a World Cup," says Ronaldo.
Despite those remarks, Ronaldo was seen in tears after the final whistle as Portugal bowed out of the FIFA World Cup.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the match went into stoppage time.
Mikel Merino scored the lone goal in injury time to give Spain a 1-0 victory. Substitute Ferran Torres set up the Arsenal midfielder, who slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner of the net.
Portugal suffered another setback when Nuno Mendes exited in the 56th minute after hyperextending his knee. Nelson Semedo replaced the PSG left-back and took over the task of marking Spain winger Lamine Yamal.
Semedo, 32, struggled to contain Yamal, allowing the Barcelona star to register the joint-most touches in the opposition penalty area.
Spain advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals, where it will face Belgium.
