Belgium advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals after defeating the United States, ending the host nation's tournament run and setting up a showdown with Spain.
The Round of 16 match was preceded by controversy involving U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.
Balogun had initially been handed a one-match suspension, but FIFA later lifted the ban and instead imposed a one-year probation and a $40,000 fine, allowing him to start against Belgium.
The decision came after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly called on FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the case, prompting criticism from fans on social media, who questioned the governing body's impartiality.
Belgium wasted little time taking control, with Charles De Ketelaere opening the scoring in the ninth minute after converting Nicolas Raskin's pass from inside the penalty area.
The United States equalized in the 31st minute through Malik Tillman, but De Ketelaere restored Belgium's lead moments later by completing his brace.
Substitute Hans Vanaken extended Belgium's advantage in the second half with a long-range strike that found the bottom corner.
The Americans' night worsened when captain Christian Pulisic went down injured, while Balogun struggled to make an impact before being substituted in the 90th minute.
Romelu Lukaku sealed Belgium's victory with a stoppage-time goal.
De Ketelaere finished with two goals and one assist to earn Superior Player of the Match honors.
With the defeat, the United States became the last co-host to exit the tournament.
