France booked its place in the World Cup quarterfinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Kylian Mbappé.
Despite entering the match as heavy favorites, Les Bleus struggled to break down a disciplined Paraguayan side that had stunned Germany in the previous round.
Paraguay's compact 5-4-1 formation frustrated France throughout the match, limiting the tournament favorites to few clear-cut chances while disrupting their attacking rhythm.
France's frustration showed as three players were booked, while Paraguay escaped without a single yellow card despite its physical approach.
The closest France came before halftime was a spectacular overhead kick from Michael Olise, whose effort rattled the post in the 35th minute.
The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute when Diego Gómez fouled Désiré Doué inside the penalty area.
Mbappé calmly converted from the spot to score the game's only goal and send France into the last eight.
Late in the match, the Bayern Munich forward lost his composure after shoving Matías Galarza, earning a yellow card.
France advances to face Morocco in the quarterfinals.
Morocco swept Canada in 3-0 win.
The Co-hosts held onto possession in the first 45 minutes of the game, but were unable to generate any scoring chances. Despite completing more than double the Moroccans' passes, Canada only registered one shot on target.
