Filipino three-division champion Johnriel Casimero has crashed the latest rankings released by the Mexico-based World Boxing Council (WBC).
After the World Boxing Organization listed him at No. 4 in the super-bantamweight ranks, the WBC rated Casimero at No. 11 in the featherweight class.
Casimero’s sudden appearance stems from his last performance in Japan about a month ago when he scored a vicious fourth-round knockout of Mexican Luis “Pantera” Nery.
However, it doesn’t guarantee Casimero a sure shot at the world title but his inclusion nonetheless is a good start.
His main target is undisputed world super-bantamweight titlist and pound-for-pound king Naoya “Monster” Inoue.
Following his sensational win over Nery, Casimero’s popularity grew with The Ring magazine featuring him in its posts on social media.
While other posts by The Ring about world champions drew minimal reactions, posts on Casimero generated a tremendous response and solid engagement.
Next to eight-division legend Manny Pacquiao, the 37-year-old Casimero is the Philippines’ most popular fighter.
His win over Nery boosted Casimero’s win-loss-draw record to 36-5-1 with 25 knockouts.
Nowadays, the Leyte-born Casimero fights under the 3150 Promotions of former three-division titleholder Koki Kameda.
