Authorities secured an unexploded ordnance Thursday evening after a local resident accidentally uncovered a vintage 60MM mortar cartridge along the northbound lane of C6 Road in Barangay Hagonoy, Taguig City.
A local jeepney driver was burning pieces of wood inside a rented garage when he accidentally struck a hard object embedded in the ground. Upon closer inspection, he discovered a metallic object resembling a bomb. He immediately notified the garage caretaker and reported the finding to Taguig City Police Station's Sub-station 9 at around 9 p.m.
Responding police personnel immediately dispatched a team to secure the area. Arriving personnel cordoned off the perimeter to eliminate any immediate danger to nearby residents and motorists.
Special Explosive and Canine Unit (SECU) personnel were deployed to assess the vintage weapon. Technicians identified the item as a live 60MM mortar cartridge and successfully performed render-safe procedures using the pick-up and carry-away method.
The ordnance was transported to the SECU Office for temporary safekeeping and proper disposal, and the area was cleared of any threats.
