The engagement of the Department of Justice–Office of Cybercrime (DoJ-OOC) with the social media platform giant TikTok was strengthened following a meeting aimed at improving cooperation on cybercrime investigations and online safety.
In a statement, the DoJ met with TikTok Legal Policy Operations officer Mr. Yusuke Mori to discuss the legal and operational processes governing law-enforcement requests involving the platform.
Tackled during the meeting were preservation requests, requests for information and content removal requests, including the scope, requirements and limitations applicable to each process.
Serving as the country’s central authority on international cooperation in cybercrime cases and issues guidelines for cybercrime investigations, the DoJ-OOC said the meeting sought to enhance coordination between government authorities and the social media platform.
Tech engagements essential
They explored opportunities to expand collaboration on public awareness campaigns, digital safety initiatives, and coordinated efforts to address cybercrime and other online threats.
The DoJ-OOC said continued engagement with technology companies is becoming increasingly important as cyber threats grow more complex and sophisticated.
It said stronger cooperation with digital platforms will help facilitate international coordination, ensure the preservation of electronic evidence, protect internet users and support cybercrime investigations while upholding the rule of law.
