Stray bullet kills teacher during deadly ambush

Regional education officials have condemned an ambush by armed men over the weekend that left a volunteer teacher and an army soldier dead in Lanao del Sur province.
The Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education issued a statement mourning Hapipah S. Macadato, a newly licensed professional teacher who was killed by a stray bullet while traveling home Saturday.
“Her untimely death is a profound loss not only to her family and loved ones, but also to the education sector,” the ministry said, calling for a swift and thorough investigation. “Teachers and education workers are builders of peace... They must be protected at all times.”
Macadato, a resident of nearby Picong town, was riding a local motorcycle-for-hire in Barangay Lamin when she was struck in the back of the head by gunfire. She died instantly, according to regional police spokesperson Capt. Steffi Salanguit.
The gunfire was directed at a passing white Toyota Hilux carrying state security forces. Marine Cpl. Jayson Castro was killed in the attack, and the vehicle’s driver, Richard Estomen, was wounded.
Five other government militiamen aboard the pickup truck escaped injury.
Police said the troops were returning to their detachment following a security operation in Barangay Baras when gunmen opened fire on the convoy.
