Canada makes history, South Africa eliminated

Canada advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in tournament history after defeating South Africa 1-0 in stoppage time.

Canada reached the knockout stage after finishing second in its group behind Switzerland, while South Africa entered the match fresh off a victory over Korea Republic.

Canada controlled much of the contest, registering four shots on target to South Africa's one, but struggled to break through until the closing moments. Defender Alphonso Davies also made his return from a hamstring injury, entering late in the second half.

Stephen Eustaquio scored the winner in the 92nd minute, controlling the ball with his chest before firing a right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made five saves, but it was not enough to prevent Canada's historic breakthrough.

Canada will face Morocco in the Round of 16.

Brazil rallies past Japan

Brazil came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 and book its place in the Round of 16.

After topping its group on goal difference over Morocco, Brazil faced a disciplined Japanese side that finished second in Group F.

Japan stunned Brazil just before halftime when Kaishu Sano outran Casemiro before scoring from outside the penalty area.

Casemiro redeemed himself in the 56th minute, heading in Gabriel's cross to level the match. Japan defended deep for the remainder of regulation, but substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored the winner in the 95th minute from a Bruno Guimarães delivery.

Brazil advanced despite another difficult performance, while Japan's World Cup campaign came to an end.

Paraguay upsets Germany in penalties

Paraguay pulled off one of the tournament's biggest upsets, eliminating Germany 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay a first-half lead before Kai Havertz equalized shortly after halftime.

Germany dominated possession and created several chances but could not find a winner. Jonathan Tah thought he had scored in the closing minutes of regulation, only for VAR to rule the goal out.

Neither team scored in extra time, sending the match to penalties. Goalkeeper Orlando Gill made several crucial saves before Tah missed Germany's decisive spot kick, sending Paraguay through.

Morocco eliminates Netherlands in shootout

Morocco advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.

The match remained evenly contested until Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch a late lead. Morocco responded in stoppage time when Issa Diop headed home Chemsidine Talbi's cross to force extra time.

Neither side could find a winner before penalties. After several misses from both teams, goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied Crysencio Summerville's attempt, allowing Ismael Saibari to convert the winning penalty and send Morocco through.

Diop was named Player of the Match.
