Former Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin admitted before the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Monday that he has not secured an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) since he began working in the Philippines in 2013.
The New Zealand national argued that he believed an AEP was unnecessary because he holds a permanent resident visa.
However, under Article 40 of the Labor Code and DOLE Department Order No. 248, series of 2025, foreign nationals working in the Philippines are generally required to obtain an AEP.
Baldwin said he received an email in 2015 regarding the application for an AEP but did not complete the process.
DOLE has also summoned Ateneo de Manila University officials to appear on 9 July for a conference regarding Baldwin's work authorization.
The absence of an AEP covers Baldwin's nearly 13 years of employment in the Philippines, including his stint as Ateneo's head coach and several consultancy roles.
Aside from coaching Ateneo, Baldwin served as a consultant and assistant coach for the PBA's TNT Tropang 5G, then known as Talk 'N Text, from 2014 to 2020.
In 2015, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas appointed Baldwin as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas, a position he held for two years.
Ateneo named Baldwin its head coach in 2016, and he guided the Blue Eagles to four UAAP championships.
He resigned on 15 June following the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
