Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Monday said his office is set to file a plunder case against Sen. Rodante Marcoleta this week over the alleged non-disclosure of a P75-million campaign donation in his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN).
Remulla said the case stems from the alleged omission of a P75-million "gift" Marcoleta received in 2025 from former congressman Mike Defensor and businessmen Joseph Espiritu and Aristotle Viray while he was still serving as a member of the House of Representatives.
The same transaction had previously been reviewed by the Commission on Elections, which ruled that it did not constitute an election offense despite the funds not being declared in Marcoleta's Statement of Contributions and Expenditures. However, the poll body ordered a separate investigation into the donors for their alleged failure to submit contribution reports.
The Ombudsman said its investigation focuses on the alleged non-disclosure in Marcoleta's SALN and provisions of the Anti-Plunder Law covering the receipt of gifts or pecuniary benefits by public officials.
Marcoleta has denied any wrongdoing, calling the complaints "trumped-up" and suggesting they were linked to his role in the Senate's flood control investigation and the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
As of Monday, the senator had yet to issue a statement on the Ombudsman's latest announcement.
