ILOILO CITY — The local government here has launched the “Eco-nnect Bottle-to-WiFi Vendo,” an initiative that rewards residents with free internet access in exchange for used plastic bottles to promote recycling.
The machine, installed at the entrance of Iloilo City Hall, allows visitors and employees to deposit empty PET bottles to receive WiFi connectivity.
Mayor Raisa Treñas said the project aims to encourage the public to recycle plastic bottles rather than discard them, helping reduce plastic waste across the city.
“We want to encourage everyone to bring their empty PET bottles instead of discarding them because they can exchange these for free WiFi,” Treñas said.
The mayor added that the city plans to expand the initiative by introducing additional incentives in the future.
“We will continue to innovate this project,” she said. “Aside from free WiFi, we are also exploring other possible rewards, such as providing free dog food for pet owners.”
The Data Assessment and System Management Office developed the machine, which was fabricated by the General Services Office as part of the city’s environmental sustainability and digital inclusion programs.
City officials said the project demonstrates how technology can be used to promote responsible waste management while providing practical community benefits.
