Six people were injured when a portable liquefied petroleum gas tank, commonly known as a “superkalan,” exploded inside a residential kitchen in Barangay NBSS-Dagat Dagatan.
The incident occurred at 9:27 a.m. at a home on Matang Baka Street. Closed-circuit television footage showed the blast, which investigators suspect was caused by a gas leak that ignited while the stove was being lit.
A 47-year-old woman, identified by the alias “Analiza,” was admitted to Navotas City Hospital with skin burns. She was reportedly lighting the stove to prepare food for her vending business when the explosion occurred.
Her two sons, ages 24 and 13, also suffered burns to their bodies and faces and are being treated at Tondo Medical Center.
Among those most severely injured was a 56-year-old woman, identified as “Mayette,” who is currently in the intensive care unit at Tondo Medical Center with burns across her body.
A 31-year-old man, identified as “Albert,” is also confined at the same hospital with extensive burns. A 45-year-old woman was treated for forehead injuries and released.
The CCTV footage showed the intensity of the flash fire, capturing an older woman whose dress caught fire as she ran for water.
Debris from a falling tent and umbrella stand narrowly missed three children playing outside the home.
The Navotas City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection issued a warning following the blast, urging residents not to use “superkalan” stoves inside their homes.
Authorities cited these units are designed exclusively for outdoor use because the burner is positioned directly atop the LPG tank.Six people were injured when a portable liquefied petroleum gas tank, commonly known as a “superkalan,” exploded inside a residential kitchen in Barangay NBSS-Dagat Dagatan.
