The camp of World Boxing Council (WBC) strawweight champion Melvin Jerusalem is not wasting precious time waiting for a unification fight to happen.
In fact, Jerusalem and his people are on the lookout for a title fight after the scheduled 14 March showdown with Puerto Rican two-belt titleholder Oscar Collazo was scrapped owing to promotional issues.
The decision not to proceed with the Jerusalem-Collazo duel at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, was made on Valentine’s Day, leaving the Filipino champion in utter disbelief.
What made it heartbreaking is the fact that the event is pushing through with Collazo defending his World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association straps against Jesus Haro of the United States.
Michael Domingo, who trains Jerusalem, could not help but bang his head on the wall in disgust.
“We sacrificed the Christmas season by training and then we got the news that the fight is off,” Domingo said.
JC Mananquil, who promotes Jerusalem alongside Japanese partners, told DAILY TRIBUNE that the June or July date is not yet cast in stone.
“We would like to see if he (Jerusalem) can fight another opponent in the next month or so,” Mananquil said.
