A robbery suspect was killed while a police officer was wounded during a dragnet operation in Barangay Bantug, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija on 17 February 2026, following a reported robbery in nearby Gabaldon earlier that day.
According to the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office (NEPPO), personnel from the Bongabon Municipal Police Station attempted to intercept two motorcycles believed to be used by the suspects in the Gabaldon robbery.
Instead of stopping, the riders fled toward the town proper of Bongabon, prompting a hot pursuit.
The chase ended when the two motorcycles lost control and crashed into a cemented portion of the road. The suspects attempted to flee on foot, and one allegedly opened fire at the pursuing officers.
Police returned fire, triggering an armed encounter. One officer was hit in the left thigh and was rushed to the Bongabon District Hospital before being transferred to the Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center for further treatment.
One of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. His alleged accomplice was arrested and taken into custody for investigation and filing of charges.
