The Department of Health (DoH) announced that Lenacapavir, a new injectable medication for HIV treatment, will soon be available in the Philippines. Secretary Dr. Teodory “Ted” Herbosa shared on DZMM this Saturday that the supply is being provided through the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Lenacapavir is long-acting, meaning it can stay in a person’s system for up to a year, and may initially be given as oral tablets before transitioning to subcutaneous injections every six months. It must be used alongside other medications to be fully effective.

Herbosa also reminded Filipinos this Valentine’s season to get tested for HIV before engaging in intimate activities. “It’s very important to know your status before you engage with others. Regular testing is key,” he said.

The DoH currently operates 338 designated HIV care facilities nationwide, and FDA-approved self-test kits are available through various civil society organizations.

The secretary highlighted the urgency of HIV prevention, noting the Philippines records one of the highest daily cases in the ASEAN region, with about 60 new infections per day — mostly young men. “For people living with HIV, it’s manageable. Early treatment can save lives,” he added.

According to UNAIDS and WHO, the Philippines saw a 550 percent increase in HIV-related cases from 2010 to 2024, totaling nearly 29,600 new infections. The introduction of Lenacapavir is expected to expand treatment options and help curb the spread of HIV in the country.
