COTABATO CITY — The Police Regional Office 12 (PRO12) has recorded significant gains in its campaign against contraband, seizing 14,796 reams of illicit tobacco valued at P12.29 million last month, according to its latest report.

A total of 92 suspects were arrested in 127 operations, with the campaign focused on disrupting supply chains rather than merely increasing arrest numbers. The effort relied on intelligence validated through community input, PRO12 said.

From January to December 2025, PRO12 also carried out 1,456 anti-drug operations, resulting in 1,653 arrests and the seizure of 12.98 kilograms of shabu and 12.29 kilograms of marijuana, with a combined value of P85.9 million.

“Effective policing isn’t just about enforcement—it’s about understanding the roots of crime and working with communities,” said Arnold P. Ardiente, PRO12 regional director, in a statement.

Ardiente explained that the strategy integrates intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, and sustained on-the-ground presence to anticipate threats and shield vulnerable sectors from the economic and social damage caused by the contraband trade.

“Contraband and illegal drugs don’t just harm our economy—they erode the very fabric of our communities, preying on the poor and undermining trust in our institutions,” Ardiente said. “Every operation we launch is a commitment to ensuring that hardworking families in SOCCSKSARGEN can build their lives on a foundation of safety and fairness.”

By balancing firm law enforcement with prevention and accountability, he said PRO12 aims to convert short-term operational gains into long-term peace and economic integrity for the region. The holistic approach also includes partnerships with local government units, business groups, and civil society to strengthen border controls, boost public awareness, and provide pathways for individuals seeking to leave illegal activities behind.
