The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday announced the passing of James Jimenez, its longtime former spokesperson.
In a statement, the poll body said, "The Commission on Elections mourns the passing of James Jimenez, former Spokesperson and Director IV, Education and Information Department of the Commission, who served the institution and the Filipino people with integrity, clarity, and utmost dedication."
Comelec paid tribute to Jimenez, describing him as "the public face and steady voice of the Commission" from July 2006 until his retirement in September 2022.
"Jimenez holds the rare distinction of being the longest-serving and youngest spokesperson in government at the time of his appointment."
From July 2006 to September 2022, Jimenez served as the public face of Comelec, explaining complex electoral processes with precision, defending democratic institutions with calm resolve, and engaging citizens and the media with respect, wit and transparency.
Comelec also extended its condolences to Jimenez’s family and loved ones.
"Comelec extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones. We honor his legacy of public service and his enduring contribution to election transparency and voter education. His voice, professionalism, and quiet courage will be remembered."
