ILOILO CITY — Antique Airport can now handle 360 passengers, a more than five-fold increase from its previous capacity of 64, following a major modernization development that boosts regional connectivity and economic potential.

The upgraded Principal Class 2 airport now boasts a 2,224-square-meter passenger terminal, a tenfold expansion from the previous 181-square-meter facility, with check-in counters tripled to six, dramatically improving the travel experience.

A runway extension from 1,430 meters to 1,800 meters now accommodates larger jet aircraft, while the expanded ramp can host up to four planes simultaneously, setting the stage for more flights and airline investments.

Stellar example

During official inaugural ceremonies in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique on Monday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hailed the newly modernized airport as a stellar example of quality infrastructure delivered through honest and efficient spending.

The President said he was pleasantly surprised about the project’s cost-effectiveness, noting that total improvements amounted to only P120 million, a fraction of what similar upgrades typically require.

He challenged the Department of Transportation (DoTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to make the airport a “standard for service,” proving that proper use of public funds can produce facilities that are faster, cheaper, and better for the Filipino people.

Regional growth engine

President Marcos, joined by Senator Loren Legarda and key DoTr and CAAP officials, emphasized the airport’s strategic importance as a regional growth engine, boosting tourism, trade, and mobility for Antiqueños long constrained by limited air access.

“The developments at Antique Airport are a symbol of progress and pride for the province,” Marcos said. “This project demonstrates that when public funds are used correctly, we can deliver world-class facilities that drive economic growth and enhance people’s lives.”

Also highlighted with pride during the airport inauguration were the upgraded air traffic control towers, modern baggage handling systems, and inclusive facilities for persons with disabilities and breastfeeding mothers, bringing Antique airport up to national aviation standards.
