Music takes on a deeper meaning this Valentine season as artists, advocates, and civic leaders come together for Alay sa Mag-Nanay, a pre-Valentine dinner benefit concert dedicated to one urgent mission: protecting the lives of mothers and their children during the most critical stage of growth.
Set to unfold at The Manila Hotel, the concert is a collaborative initiative of the Knights of Rizal and the Children’s First 1000 Days Coalition, aimed at supporting indigent pregnant mothers in Manila through nutrition and maternal health programs.
The advocacy centers on the first 1,000 days of life—from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday—a window experts consider decisive for lifelong health and development. Malnutrition during this period can lead to irreversible consequences, including stunting, weakened immunity, and impaired learning capacity later in life.
During the announcement at Kapihan sa Manila Hotel, civic leaders and performers underscored why the concert goes beyond entertainment. It is, at its core, a call to action.
“Napaka-special ng concert project na ito para sa amin dahil marami ito matutulungan na mga mothers at mga bata,” said The Rainmakers vocalist Joel Macanaya.
(“This concert project is very special to us because it will help many mothers and children.”)
Proceeds from the evening will directly benefit expectant mothers identified in coordination with Barangay Health Workers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars across Manila—ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most, at the earliest possible stage.
The urgency of the cause is echoed by global data. According to UNICEF, an estimated 95 Filipino children under the age of five die each day due to malnutrition—an alarming figure that highlights the need for sustained, community-based interventions.
The concert also reinforces the goals of Republic Act No. 11148, or the First 1,000 Days Act, which promotes a whole-of-society approach to maternal and child nutrition—an advocacy long championed by the Knights of Rizal as a member organization of the Children’s First 1000 Days Coalition.
Directed by Macanaya, the night will blend advocacy with artistry, featuring performances by Aicelle Santos, Gerphil Flores, Allison Gonzales, and Gibzon Villajuan, with special participation by the HOPE Children’s Choir and guest Joey Lina.
As love fills the air this Valentine season, Alay sa Mag-Nanay reminds audiences that the most powerful expressions of affection are those that save lives—one mother, one child, and one song at a time.
