The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday dismissed claims that the seizure of several luxury vehicles allegedly linked to former Ako Bicol Partylist Representative Zaldy Co was illegal, maintaining that the operation followed all established legal procedures.
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. disclosed that the raid, conducted at a multi-level parking facility in Taguig City on 8 January, complied with orders from proper authorities.
“The operation was in compliance with an order from proper authorities,” Nartatez said in a statement. “We want to assure the public that all actions of the Philippine National Police are legal and in accordance with the law.”
This comes amid allegations from Co’s attorney, Ruy Rondain, who claimed police conducted an illegal stop and search without a warrant. Rondain also alleged that officers intimidated Co’s driver and detained him for more than 12 hours.
“They took the keys to, I think, 34 cars by force,” Rondain said. “It was illegal because they conducted an illegal stop and search of the client’s car.”
However, Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan, director of the PNP Highway Patrol Group, said the police and Bureau of Customs personnel were executing a valid search warrant. Marantan noted that some of the vehicles were reported as “spurious” and were suspected of containing contraband.
Customs officials confirmed the warrant was presented to and received by the legal counsel for the Bonifacio Global City condominium building where the raid occurred.
Among the seized high-end vehicles were a Rolls-Royce, a Toyota Sequoia, a Cadillac Escalade and a Lexus.
Nartatez said the PNP’s involvement is part of a broader investigation into alleged corruption regarding flood control projects. Co, who previously chaired the House Appropriations Committee, has been a central figure in the probe.
To recall, Co has denied involvement in any “ghost” flood control projects and has instead accused high-ranking government officials of corruption.
The former lawmaker remains abroad, citing security concerns, and recently resigned his post after the House of Representatives canceled his travel authority and ordered his return.
