Senator Christopher “Bong” Go welcomed the P700 million allocation for the development of Mati Airport in Mati City, Davao Oriental, under the Department of Transportation’s 2026 budget, saying it will improve regional connectivity and boost tourism in the province.

Go raised the matter during the interpellation of the proposed 2026 budget of the DoTr, where he pushed for sustained funding and continued implementation of the airport’s development and eventual operationalization.

He said concerned government agencies should ensure the project moves forward without delays to fully realize its benefits for Davao Oriental and nearby areas.

Go, an ex officio member of the Mindanao Development Authority Board of Directors representing the Senate, said the Mati Airport could help decongest the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City by serving as an alternative gateway to the region and cutting travel time for passengers.

The senator, who said he has roots in Davao Oriental, added that improved air access would help boost tourism and expand economic opportunities in the province.

He previously identified the Mati Airport as a priority infrastructure project during the 58th Araw ng Davao Oriental celebration on 1 July 2024 and urged stakeholders to work together to maximize the province’s tourism potential.

Go cited key destinations in the province, including Mount Hamiguitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Dahican Beach in Mati City; and Pusan Point in Caraga, which is known as the site of the first sunrise in the Philippines.

With the allocation secured, Go said the focus should be on efficient implementation, linking transportation infrastructure to tourism growth, job creation and economic activity.

“Transportation has always been the backbone of our economy. It fuels economic growth, connects our communities, and allows our people to have access to education, work, and opportunities,” he said.
