For John Rey Figueroa of Gagalangin, Tondo, devotion to the Black Nazarene is not counted by the number of times one joins the Traslación, but by a lifetime shaped by answered prayers, quiet service, and gratitude.
A devotee since 1997, Figueroa describes his faith not as an obligation but as a deeply personal journey grounded in lived experience—one that has guided him through milestones and moments of uncertainty.
“Napakaraming hiling ko sa Kanya ang natupad—una, ’yung nakapagtapos ako ng pag-aaral,” he shared, recalling one of the earliest prayers he entrusted to the Black Nazarene. For Figueroa, completing his education was more than an achievement; it was proof of faith that sustained him through hardship.
His devotion deepened further during a family health crisis. “Nagkasakit din ang kapatid ko. Idinadal ko sa Nazareno ang kagalingan niya, at ibinigay din ’yun—at marami pang iba,” he said, noting how each answered prayer strengthened his resolve to continue serving rather than merely asking.
That gratitude is expressed through action. Figueroa is among the volunteers who serve as floristas during the annual Gayak festivities, helping prepare and adorn the sacred images ahead of the Nazarene celebrations. For him, this form of service carries a quiet sense of fulfillment.
“Masarap sa pakiramdam at ’yung feeling ng fulfillment at kaligayahan ang nararamdaman ko every time na naglilingkod ako sa Kanya,” he said.
Nearly three decades after becoming a devotee, Figueroa remains steadfast. His story reflects a faith strengthened by trials and shaped by gratitude—one that endures not through spectacle, but through service, humility, and the belief that sincere prayers are never unheard.
