San Beda University head coach Yuri Escueta isn’t worried about the recent noise surrounding star guard Janti Miller after winning the school’s 24th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball crown last December.
Escueta, who also serves as an assistant coach for TNT in the Philippine Basketball Association, said players getting involved in transfers is nothing new to them but is optimistic the 6-foot-4 shooting guard will stick around for the Red Lions’ title defense in Season 102.
Miller made headlines last December when he was spotted watching Game 2 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) finals between University of the Philippines and De La Salle University at the Mall of Asia Arena, sparking speculations he could be on the move.
“A lot of players and coaches are being wooed from San Beda. Whatever his decision is, we’re not stopping him. Players have gone but the program continued,” Escueta said during the episode of Off the Court, the weekly sports show of DAILY TRIBUNE.
“Hopefully he stays and let’s see what happens.”
Miller averaged 19.77 points, 6.08 rebounds, and 1.15 assists in the elimination round in his rookie season and even bagged Mythical Team honors.
The Fairfield, California native even dropped 16 points and nine rebounds in Game 1 of their best-of-three championship series against rival Letran College before he was sent off after getting slapped with two technical fouls for flopping.
Despite missing Miller’s presence, San Beda ended up victorious, 89-70, in Game 1 and delivered an 83-71 victory in Game 2 to seal the deal.
