LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman called on provincial officials and staff to embrace unity, accountability and swift action to tackle the province’s pressing challenges during Monday’s first flag-raising ceremony of 2026.

In his address, Hataman praised the people of Basilan for their solidarity throughout 2025 and stressed the need for collective progress. “We face many challenges and have gaps to fill. Most importantly, we must keep our hearts open to change and let go of our shortcomings and mistakes,” he said.

The governor urged leaders to put aside differences and work together for the public good. “No matter our differences, in the end, we must unite to prioritize the interests of our people,” he added.

Highlighting critical issues, Hataman noted the province’s struggles with public health and hospital capacity, citing over P20 million allocated to hospitals amid insufficient services. He also acknowledged Basilan’s ongoing fight against poverty. “Basilan remains one of the poorest provinces in the region,” he said.

A key theme of his address was the importance of aligning provincial efforts with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). “We are not separate from BARMM. We are one of its provinces. Your success is our success, and our success belongs to all our citizens. Always remember: we exist for them, not for ourselves,” Hataman stressed.

He also highlighted education as a priority, noting the Ministry of Science and Technology-BARMM has pledged expanded scholarships for Basilan students.
