Suarez still waiting for WBO response

It looks as if Charly Suarez will have to wait a little longer more before getting his long-awaited world title opportunity.

Two weeks ago, Suarez and his camp wrote a letter to the World Boxing Organization (WBO) requesting that the boxing body uphold the undefeated Filipino fighter’s right as mandatory challenger to Mexican defending champion Emanuel Navarrete.

The inquiry has apparently fallen on deaf ears as Suarez and his team, made up of chief handler Ric Navalta amd lead trainer Delfin Boholst, have yet to get an answer.

Navarrete is slated to face Eduardo Nuñez, the International Boxing Federation titleholder in the 130-pound category, in February in Arizona in an all-Mexican, two-belt showdown.

Suarez had been installed as Navarrete’s mandatory challenger on the strength of the California State Athletic Commission’s decision to reverse his earlier technical decision defeat to Navarrete into a No-Contest.

The commission decided to change the official verdict after reviewing the controversial ending to their match last May in San Diego, California.

In that fight, it was discovered that a legitimate Suarez lunch had opened a cut on Navarrete’s eyebrow — and not a headbutt that referee Ed Collantes had earlier ruled — that led to the stoppage of the scheduled 12-rounder.

Since the wound was caused by a butt, according to the referee, the outcome had to go to the scorecards.

Navarrete was leading on the scorecards when the bout was stopped and Suarez and his team insisted that it should have been clearly a technical knockout victory.

In the meantime, Suarez remains in waiting mode.

Boholst said that Suarez continues to train, nursing hopes that a miracle happens.
