Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel rescued a fisherman on Christmas Day after he went missing during a solo fishing excursion off the coast of Zambales.
The crew member, identified as Larry Tumalis of the fishing boat Gavin, had departed from his mother boat in a smaller vessel to conduct fishing operations on 24 December. When the Gavin returned to Tumalis’ last known location later that day, the crew could not find him.
After an unsuccessful two-hour search on Christmas Eve, the crew waited until the following morning to resume their efforts. When Tumalis remained missing, the crew alerted the Coast Guard.
The PCG deployed the BRP Cape San Agustin to the waters off Silanguin Island on Friday morning. Search and rescue teams located Tumalis at approximately 2:15 p.m.
Coast Guard medical and nursing personnel conducted a health assessment and provided psychosocial support to ensure the fisherman’s well-being. Officials reported that Tumalis was in good condition following the ordeal.
The BRP Cape San Agustin later transferred Tumalis back to the Gavin to reunite with his crew and family.
