Authorities are investigating an incident involving an on-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer who discharged his firearm after what he claimed was an assault following a minor traffic collision near John F. Kennedy International Airport.
According to a report by NBC News, the incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. near the southbound lanes of the Van Wyck Expressway close to the entrance of JFK’s central terminal. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash at the location.
When officers arrived, they encountered the CBP officer, who told investigators that another driver became aggressive after the apparent fender-bender and allegedly assaulted him. The officer said he fired his service weapon multiple times during the confrontation.
NBC News reported that when Port Authority officers reached the scene, no other individuals were present, and authorities have not yet located the other driver allegedly involved in the incident. Officials also said no injuries were reported.
The circumstances surrounding the encounter, including what led to the alleged assault and the discharge of the firearm, remain under review.
