NCDA endorses ‘I’mPerfect’ film promoting disability inclusion

The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) on Wednesday expressed full support for the upcoming Filipino film “I’mPerfect,” describing it as a timely and meaningful cinematic work that promotes disability inclusion and empowering narratives of persons with disabilities, particularly children with Down Syndrome.

“The NCDA fully supports the film and encourages the public to watch it as a meaningful step toward disability awareness and sensitivity. We believe that media plays a crucial role in shaping positive perceptions and fostering a culture that recognizes the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities,” NCDA Executive Director Glenda Relova said.

Relova underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between government and the creative industry to amplify advocacy for the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities.

“Beyond legislative and policy efforts, the NCDA recognizes the vital role of storytelling and media in shaping public understanding and breaking down long-standing stereotypes,” she said.

Aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, the NCDA said the film highlights the rights, dignity, and capabilities of children with Down Syndrome, including their right to family life, love, and relationships.

Produced by Nathan Studios Inc., “I’mPerfect” tells the story of two lead characters with Down Syndrome—Jiro, played by Earl Jonathan Amanda, and Jessica, portrayed by Anne Krystel Daphne Go—as they navigate love, acceptance, and freedom. The film emphasizes that children with Down Syndrome are capable, valued, and deserving of equal opportunities, marking a significant step toward more inclusive narratives in Philippine cinema.

Directed by Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo, known for the hit film “Kita Kita,” the movie is an official entry in the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival. It has already garnered millions of views online and sparked discussions on disability inclusion.

The film also features a supporting cast that includes Sylvia Sanchez, Janice De Belen, Lorna Tolentino, Tonton Gutierrez, Joey Marquez, and Zaijian Jaranilla.

A line from the film’s teaser captures its advocacy message:
“When the world says they can’t… they’ll show us they can,”

Relova said that through initiatives like “I’mPerfect,” the NCDA envisions a society where children with disabilities and all persons with disabilities are empowered to fully participate in society, enjoy their human rights, and live with dignity, love, and acceptance.
