As the holiday season approaches, Filipino moviegoers once again turn their attention to one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year—the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Now in its 51st edition, the 2025 MMFF promises a bold, refreshed cinematic experience, signaling renewed confidence in local storytelling and the enduring power of Philippine cinema.
Opening in theaters nationwide on 25 December and running through early January 2026, this year’s festival continues a cherished tradition: for the duration of the MMFF, Philippine theaters will exclusively showcase Filipino films. The annual pause on foreign releases creates a rare spotlight for local filmmakers, actors, and production houses to command the holiday box office and connect with audiences at home.
This year’s edition carries the theme “A New Era for Philippine Cinema,” a statement that reflects both ambition and evolution. The official lineup was carefully curated through a two-stage selection process that underscored creativity, diversity, and readiness for both local and global audiences. The first batch of entries was chosen from submitted scripts earlier in the year, while the remaining films earned their slots as completed works—allowing the selection committee to assess not just concepts, but fully realized visions.
Guided by a selection panel led by Boots Anson-Rodrigo, the chosen films reflect a balance of artistry and accessibility. Each entry was evaluated on its creative merit, entertainment value, cultural relevance, and international potential—ensuring that the festival slate appeals to a wide range of viewers while remaining distinctly Filipino at heart.
Beyond the screen, the 2025 MMFF also marks a milestone in its celebrations. For the first time in festival history, Makati takes center stage as host city, adding a fresh urban backdrop to long-standing traditions. One of the most anticipated events, the Parade of the Stars, will roll through Makati on December 19, transforming the city into a moving celebration of film, fandom, and festive spectacle.
The excitement culminates in the Gabi ng Parangal, scheduled for December 27, when filmmakers, performers, and creative teams will be honored for their achievements. As always, the awards night is expected to be a mix of glamour and gratitude—recognizing excellence while celebrating the collaborative spirit behind every film.
At its core, the Metro Manila Film Festival remains more than a competition. It is a statement of faith in Filipino creativity, a showcase of evolving narratives, and a communal ritual that brings families and friends together during the holidays. With fresh stories, a historic host city, and a renewed vision for the future, the 2025 MMFF stands poised to remind audiences why local cinema continues to matter—now more than ever.
