PLDT-Smart backs DICT push for affordable internet

PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications Inc. have expressed support for the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) assessment that internet services in the Philippines are becoming more affordable and offer better value.

PLDT chief operating officer Menardo G. Jimenez said the group remains aligned with government efforts to expand digital access nationwide, citing improvements in data pricing, fiber speeds and connectivity programs targeting geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Jimenez said these gains reflect coordination between the public and private sectors, as the government continues to pursue policies aimed at widening internet access and lowering costs for consumers.

Smart first vice president Lloyd Manaloto said the company has steadily reduced the effective cost of mobile data over the past six years while increasing data allocations.

He cited the shift from a 1GB data package priced at P50 in 2019 to current offers that provide multiple data bundles at the same price point.

The PLDT Group said it continues to invest in network expansion, including fiber and wireless infrastructure, to support rising demand for data services.

It said it is also participating in government programs such as the Bayanihan SIM initiative and public-sector connectivity projects through its corporate arm, PLDT Enterprise.

Through its information and communications technology subsidiary ePLDT Inc., the group is involved in building digital platforms and infrastructure aimed at supporting government agencies, enterprises and local communities.

These include cloud and artificial intelligence platforms designed for large-scale and secure deployment.

PLDT’s data center subsidiary, VITRO Inc., recently launched an AI-ready hyperscale campus in Santa Rosa, Laguna, which the company said could help attract international cloud and technology providers to operate locally.
