SM Supermalls’ 2025 coastal cleanup initiatives drew more than 50,000 volunteers nationwide, removing over 210,000 kilograms of waste from coastlines. The campaign culminated in the youth-focused National Day for Youth Climate in Action: “Bayanihan with a Vibe” held at SM By the Bay on 23 November.
The cleanup program is led by SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls. Activities this year included the World Oceans Day celebration in June, the International Coastal Cleanup in September, and weekly cleanups at select malls. The campaign supports the #SMWasteFreeFuture initiative, which promotes cleaner oceans and stronger community engagement.
The “Bayanihan with a Vibe” event combined cleanup activities with environmental education sessions and interactive programs. Volunteers included youth organizations, community groups, local government units, partner NGOs, and SM employees. The initiative highlighted the role of young people in climate action and sustainability efforts.
Engr. Liza Silerio, SM Cares Program Director for the Environment, noted that the campaign emphasizes sustained commitment to coastal communities and future generations. Participants gained both hands-on experience in waste collection and awareness of environmental conservation practices.
The 2025 cleanup efforts demonstrated broad participation, from students and families to corporate volunteers, reinforcing a culture of shared responsibility for the environment. SM Supermalls said it continues to integrate sustainability into operations and community programs while encouraging public involvement in long-term waste reduction initiatives.
SM Cares is part of the broader SM Green Movement, which promotes sustainable practices in waste management, energy efficiency, and water stewardship across SM Prime Holdings’ properties. Through its 89 malls in the Philippines, the company aims to foster environmental awareness while supporting inclusive and resilient community spaces.
