A seven-year-old racing prodigy has been making heads turn every time he goes into overdrive.
Torch Florentino won the overall T4 Series Philippines championship recently after winning three titles in the eight-round tournament.
The second-grade student of Marikina Catholic School said in an episode of “Off the Court,” the weekly online sports show of DAILY TRIBUNE, that he liked the feeling of going fast.
“I was happy and proud of myself. I didn’t know how to celebrate so I didn’t,” Florentino said.
“It’s just exciting and you can feel the adrenaline.”
Florentino started racing at four years old and said the only time he felt nervous driving was when he was starting out.
Since then, he only got better under the mentorship of Renz Pazcoguin.
“After a while, I’ll just get used to the kart and then I won’t get scared. He (Pazcoguin) teaches me how to go fast, how to focus, and racing lines,” Florentino said.
Florentino’s father, Gian is excited for his son’s next steps as he will be competing in the T4 Asia Cup in February next year at the Carmona Racing Track in Cavite.
“We were so excited and proud for Torch because he was able to overcome a lot of things. It wasn’t easy. It was a time well spent for the three of us and for Torch,’ Gian said.
“By February, I believe Tilotson will hold the Asian Cup. Of course, we’re studying if Torch can already join the next category but it depends on his development.”
