The Armed Forces of the Philippines gathered on Sunday at the AFP Grandstand for an assembly led by Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., together with respected religious leaders from various faith sectors.
During the event, AFP personnel renewed their oath to remain non-partisan and to defend the Constitution. The agency described the gathering as a reminder to the public that the military stands as protector of the State, its people, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The assembly took place amid reports of an alleged destabilization plot involving some retired officers. Department of National Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr., however, earlier dismissed the issue, saying the rumored coup does not represent the broader retired military community.
“How many are there? Actually, there are very few, they don’t speak for retired officials. That’s why even naming them as speaking for retired officials is unfair to the majority of retired officials,” Teodoro said on Friday.
General Brawner said the intelligence community has been directed to investigate whether any active personnel are involved in the supposed plot. He also expressed confidence in the discipline and professionalism of the troops.
"I'm very happy to report that the members of the AFP are very professional, so even though these kinds of things are happening in our society, we are aware of what is happening, but we remain professional. Our soldiers are disciplined," Brawner said.
Sunday’s gathering also featured prayers led by Bishop Noel Pantoja of the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, who called on divine guidance, wisdom and strength for the men and women of the AFP. He also prayed for the Filipino people to find unity and truth during times of uncertainty.
“Lord, unite the Filipino nation so that they may remain bearers and defenders of peace. May truth, reason, goodness, and genuine unity prevail. And for every member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines—keep them safe, strengthen them, and guide them in faithful service to Your nation," Bishop Pantoja prayed during the assembly.
General Brawner concluded the gathering by reminding troops to honor their oath — to serve with professionalism, honor and integrity, remain loyal to the Constitution, and uphold the rule of law in all actions.
